Applied FEA Learning is our valuable Intention !

It is somewhat obvious that on any subject (in our case, FEA), progress in productive learning and an effective application of FEA, strongly depends on the way how you start learning it. Therefore, each student needs just both right and good start in FEA learning to guarantee a successful/satisfactory finish. I know from my personal experience, in the beginning, students are full of eagerness and enthusiasm in learning FEA, but they generally do not have any idea of from where to start. Further, they generally have no means of finding the right amount of fruitful/worked examples, which could both train and guide them in the application/usage of FEA, for their own real-life problem solutions. I also know from my personal experience that most of the students make a wrong start in FEA learning, and eventually, they do not believe in themselves and feel generally stuck in handling real-life problems. Although, they can find and solve very traditional examples, i.e. cantilever beam bending, truss structures etc. successfully, they never consider themselves as a member of Finite Element Analysis people. They never have any bit of clue in which direction to go, or what additional good examples to solve so that they can improve in FEA. One might raise a question and say, what about tutorials? Personally, I did not see any person who "learned" any professional FEA software from that software' tutorials and/or verification manuals. Further, students get stuck with long help manuals and when they consult with inexperienced FEA people they mostly guide them in the wrong direction. Finally, students get stuck and frustrated and they distance themselves to FEA and eventually, they give up. FEA remains an unfulfilled struggle, in other words, “a tragedy” in their educational life.

 

I see this hurdle standing before FEA and which needs to be addressed by an individual who knows both professional and university life. Therefore, I believe that more efforts need to be spent on the practical side of FEA, assuming fundamental part of the Finite Element Methods is well thought. As an engineer, I spent over 20 years in this area, I really could not find a single book which meets the common needs of the students in a way that I mentioned earlier. Why? Because, most of the books written in this area, start with fundamental theory offered with very basic problems and their descriptions. Students feel the burden of constructing huge stiffness, mass matrices, and their calculations. So, you can see 3-4 Chapters are reserved for this purpose in most of the FEA books. Towards the end of the book, they introduce generic software with very basic applications and sometimes they even introduce a professional FEA software with its basics. Further, most of the simple/similar/generic problems on the market are solved using Graphical User Interface (GUI) of this software. And suddenly, when students reach the end of the FEA book, they feel themselves both unfulfilled and slightly educated. Because the FEA real application basics could be learned solely through experience which comes with the cost of doing more and more practices. Students never consider themselves at a point, very close to attempting to solve a real-life FEA problem of his/her own. Why? Because most of the textbooks on the market are far from educating the students in handling real-life FEA applications with their generic or repetitive content.

In short, it is a reality of professional life that industrial environment is very hectic and stressful for an engineer who wants to benefit his/her company and himself/herself. Let's think for a moment, as a student, you took all required Finite Element Methods (FEM) core courses and have knowledge on this subject. But if you do not have an application based experience, why would the industry value your knowledge?  In such a professional atmosphere, no one cares about the courses you took or grades you got while studying in the school. All they care about is whether as a graduate of "no-name" university, are you are capable of solving their problem in a timely manner as it should be just about right or not? Time is a very valuable asset and has wings (goes by quickly). As a responsible professional in charge, you need to undertake these responsibilities and challenges!

There is an emerging need to meet the aforementioned requirements and points. This text book is written with so good intention to undertake this challenge in FEA education.
